We’ve always said from the start that the Drink Tax issue was never about increasing property taxes, but rather about solid truthful leadership.

Check out this story and related video from WTAE-TV which clearly shows that the Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and County Council could certainly find some money to help fund some of their careless mismanagement of Port Authority by simply having people pay the property taxes they’re supposed to be paying.  They’ve been asleep at the wheel on collecting taxes that are on the books already.

When you have Stop Drink Tax Rebels who ask for nothing in return and simply work hard to express their frustration with Allegheny County Council politics in song, you just know something is terribly wrong with this unfair drink tax. Here is our good friend in Pittsburgh and local Irish Balladeer Terry Griffith with his Drink Tax Song!

Here we go again.

To the thousands of you Western Pennsylvania patriots who joined our Stop Drink Tax fight in 2007 to demand that Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and County Council stop the 10% drink tax…Thank You!

Although County Council voted to support this 10% Drink Tax on December 4, 2007 – THIS IS NOT A DONE DEAL. County Council may have won a battle, but they have not won the war! On April 30, 2008 Friends Against Counterproductive Taxation (FACT) filed an amendment to our lawsuit trying to repeal the 10% Drink Tax. The case has been certified as a class action. This was the first step in our campaign to end the tax this year.

We started to rebuild our momentum and interest in repealing the Drink Tax at the Pittsburgh Pirates Home Opener on April 7th with our FACT street team protesters seen here.

Now, we are working to force a new vote in County Council.  And, from June 17 through August 5, we will launch our third attack, “Whiskey Rebellion II” to collect 50,000 signatures on a petition to put the drink tax to a referendum in the November election.

The new tax is on pace to far exceed the $28 million it was expected to raise – maybe more than $40 million! This unfair tax was never about saving mass transit – it was meant to shore up a huge deficit in Allegheny County’s general operating fund due to mismanagement.

Dan Onorato and Council wants to turn the hospitality industry against homeowners by telling them their property taxes will go up without the drink tax. This is simply not true. There are several other tax alternatives such as a general sales tax which would be fair for all taxpayers.

Starting June 17, sign our petition at your local participating restaurant or tavern and join Whiskey Rebellion II to AXE THE DRINK TAX!

And, believe me, we’re just getting warmed up!
